Hey lads and ladies, mais
uma entrevista internacional chegando. Desta vez um papo com Jérôme Bélanger, guitarrista e membro fundador, da
Banda canadense Irish Moutarde.
IxPxB: Para
começar, acho que podemos falar um pouco de como começou a banda. Já são cinco
anos, certo? Quais foram as principais influencias musicais? Como foram os
primeiros dias e os primeiros concertos? E a aceitação por parte do publico?
Na época, o Irish Moutarde foi criado para tocar em
apenas um show! Mathieu estava em uma organização para retomar o desfile de São
Patrício na cidade de Quebec. Tocávamos Metal Progressivo na época e Mathieu
apresentou a ideia de realizar um show em tributo ao Celtic Punk para as
festividades. Fizemos principalmente covers de DKM e Flogging Molly. Em janeiro de 2010, realizamos um “show
teste”, antes das festividades de São Patrício, para cerca de 300 pessoas. Foi inacreditável! Após esta apresentação,
recebemos muitas oportunidades para tocar e foi isso: Irish Moutarde tornou-se o que é hoje. Lentamente fomos
incorporando material original e a resposta do publico foi incrível. Com toda
esta recepção positiva, decidimos gravar um álbum.
IxPxB: O
primeiro álbum foi muito bem recebido, tendo muitos reviews positivos, e
figurando em todas as mais relevantes listas de melhores álbuns de Celtic punk
do ano de 2013. Conte um pouco sobre o processo criativo e a Gravação. Foi um projeto
totalmente independente?
Primeiro, Irish Moutarde é 100% independente. É duro!
Temos eu trabalhar muito em todos os aspectos da banda. Cada membro faz o que
pode para ajudar e é muito gratificante ver o que fizemos por conta própria!
Não tínhamos ideia que este álbum seria tão bem recebido e teria reviews em
todo mundo! Ele nos levou a França para tocar para 10000 pessoas! Eu ainda não
consigo acreditar!
Nosso processo criativo foi fácil: algum membro
produzia uma demo aproximada de uma musica que tinha em mente, então tentávamos
a musica com a banda completa. Cada musico pode inserir seu próprio talento, e
é isso! Se gostássemos do resultado
final mantínhamos a canção! Mathieu, Dominic e Sébastien trouxeram realmente
canções incríveis. Estamos muito orgulhosos do resultado.
Para a produção, nos seguimos na maior parte do
caminho “Do It Yourself”; Sébastien tem grandes habilidades na produção e eu me
sinto em casa lidando com aspectos técnicos de gravação. Fred também construiu
uma cabine de gravação! Gravamos todos os vocais e instrumentos nos mesmos,
exceto a bateria. Sébastien foi para o estúdio de Jef Fortin para gravar as
seções de bateria. Jef é um guitarrista incrível banda Anonymus e tem um monte
de grandes discos na careira como produtor. Era natural pedir-lhe para a
bateria e produção, mixagem e masterização do álbum.
IxPxB: o
Irish Moutarde esta baseado na cidade de Quebec (Canadá), o pais de vocês tem
bandas de Celtic punk proeminentes como Mahones e Real McKenzies, mas a cena na
província de Quebec especificamente, como é? Vocês tem recomendações de bandas
para nós?
A primeira banda em minha mente é, obviamente, os
Mahones. Eles são de Montreal, em nossa Província. Nós tocamos com eles uma vez e foi uma insano.
Durante a grande fome na Irlanda, um grande quantidade
de famílias irlandesas teve de deixar seu pais. Eles chegaram em Quebec buscando uma vida melhor. Eu acho que as
raízes musicais dessas pessoas ajudaram a desenvolver o “Quebec Folclore” ,
como ficou conhecido. Há uma banda nova chamada Carotte. Eles acabarem de
lançar seu primeiro álbum chamado "Punklore & Trashdition" eles
juntaram os clássicos do folclore musical de Quebec em um impressionante álbum
punk! Tivemos o prazer de tocar com eles uma vez e foi fantástico! Eles
realmente merecem alguma atenção!
IxPxB: Recentemente
foi lançando a coletânea "Famous for Nothing", na qual vocês
participaram com o cover de Dirty Glass. Particularmente eu gosto muito da
versão original, mas o cover com todo o estilo Irish Moutarde ficou fantástico. Como surgiu o convite para o
projeto, e a escolha da canção?
Mathieu viu esse projeto na internet e sugeriu
tentarmos um lugar na coletânea! Candidatamos-nos sugerindo The Dirty Glass e
conseguimos uma faixa no projeto. Dirty Glass foi uma escolha natural com
Andrée-Anne na banda. Escolhemos a
musica, e tocamos com muita energia como tocamos nossas canções, e foi isso!
Estamos realmente satisfeitos e gratos por fazer parte deste projeto com todas
essas bandas impressionantes! Também é por uma boa causa! Nós obtivemos grandes
comentários para a nossa capa da canção; É outra coisa louca nunca esperaríamos
para nós com essa banda!
IxPxB: Em dezembro de 2014 Matt, Dom e
Christian deixaram a banda. Este ano começou com um reestruturação, a propósito
quero dar as boas vindas a Garbor e Antony. Como esta sendo este período e
quais os projetos do Irish Moutarde para 2015?
Vamos usar 2015 para “lapidar” os novos membros, criar
novas músicas e trabalhar em um segundo álbum! Para mim, esse período é bem
vindo para recuperar um tempo com meus filhos e minha namorada. Mathieu,
Christian e Dominic são grandes amigos. Claro que sinto falta deles, eles
trouxeram muito para a banda, mas ao mesmo tempo temos, com novos membros, uma
nova energia para trabalhar em novas canções!
IxPxB: Irish
Moutarde tem bastante admiradores no Brasil, ano passado, no show do Dropkick
Murphys vi inclusive algumas camisas da banda no meio da galera. Gostaria que
vocês deixassem um recado para todos os fãs brasileiros.
Estou muito agradecido pela oportunidade da

IxPxB: To start I think, we can talk about the band's kick off. Was 5 years ago, right? Who the principal influences and musicals references? How were the first’s days and the firsts concerts? And the public acceptance?
Jérôme: At the time, Irish Moutarde was created to play
only one gig! Mathieu was in an organisation to bring back the St-Pat's parade
in Quebec City. We were playing prog metal music at the time and Mathieu
brought up the idea to make a tribute show of celtic and Irish punk rock for
the parade festivities. We did mostly covers of Dropkick Murphy and Flogging
Molly. We did a "test show" in January 2010 before the St-Pats
festivities in front of 300 people. We had a major blast! After that show, we
received plenty of gig opportunities and that was it: Irish Moutarde became
what it is today. We slowly began to incorporate original material and the
public response was awesome. With these great reviews, we decided to make a
record!
IxPxB: The Moutarde’s first album was very
well received, positives reviews a lot, and has figured in all most relevants
best celtic punk albums list of 2013. talk about the creation and recording of
this? Was a totally independent project?
Jérôme: First off, Irish
Moutarde is 100% independent! It's tough! We have to work really hard for every
aspect of the band. Each member does what he can to help and it is so
gratifying to see what we did by ourselves! We had no idea that this record
would make it to any charts, or get reviews from all around the world! It
brought us to France to play in front of 10000 people! I still can't believe
it!
Our creation process was easy: some member
produced a rough demo of a song he or she had in mind, then we tried the song
with the full band. Each member can put its own flair to the song, and that's
it! If we like the final song, we keep it! Mathieu, Dominic and Sébastien
brought really great songs. We are really proud of the result!
For the production, we did it mostly the
DIY way; Sébastien has serious producing skills and I feel at home dealing with
the technical aspects of recording. Fred also built us a sweet recording booth!
We recorded all the vocals and instruments by ourselves, except the drums.
Sébastien went to Jef Fortin's studio to record the drum sections. Jef is the
awesome guitar player of the iconic band Anonymus and he has a bunch of great records
under his belt as a producer. It was natural for us to ask him for the drums
and producing, mixing and mastering the whole album!
IxPxB: Irish Moutarde is based in Quebec canadá,
your country have prominent Celtic Punk bands like Mahones and Real McKenzies,
but the scene in Quebec province, how is it? Do you a band recommendations for
us?
Jérôme: The first band in my mind is
obviously the Mahones. They are from Montréal, in our Province. We played with
them once and it was crazy :-P .
During the Great Famine of Ireland, a lot
of Irish families had to leave Ireland. They came to Quebec for a
better life. I think that the musical roots of those people helped Quebec to
develop the "Quebec Folklore," for what it is known. There is this
new band called Carotté. They just launched their first album called
"Punklore & Trashdition" They took the classics of Quebec's
folklore music and they twisted in an awesome punk album! We had the pleasure
to play with them one time and it was fantastic! They really deserve some
attention!
IxPxB: Recently was release the "Famous for
Nothing", for which you participate with the Dirty Glass cover.
Particularly I like so much the DPI with Stephie Daughter version, but the
Irish Moutarde like and feel was so awesome cover. How arose the invitation to
project, and the song choice?
Jérôme: Once again, Mathieu saw this project on the Internet
and suggested that we apply to get a spot on the record! We applied, suggested
The Dirty Glass and we got the spot. Dirty Glass was a natural choice with
Andrée-Anne in the band. We took the song, and we just played it with high
energy like we play our songs, and that was it! We are really pleased and
grateful to be a part of this project with all those awesome bands! It's also
for a good cause! We get great comments for our cover of that song; It's
another crazy thing we never expected for us with this band!
IxPxB: On december of 2014 Matt, Dom and
Christian left the band. This year began a restructuration, by the way, welcome
Gabor and Antony. How has been this period and which the Irish Moutarde
projects for 2015?
Jérôme: We're going to use 2015 for drilling the new
members, create a new show and work on a second album! For me, the break is
welcome to get the time back with my kids and my girlfriend. Mathieu, Christian
and Dominic are great friends. Sure we miss them, they have brought so much to
the band and at the same time, it brings a new vibe to work on new song with
the new members!
IxPxB: Irish Moutarde have many fans in Brazil. I
saw same Moutarde t-shirts in DKM concert last year in our country. I wish the
band left a message to all Brazilian fans.
Jérôme: I'm really grateful that you
give us the opportunity to do this interview!! Thanks to you and all the
Brazilian fans!
